Last week I was super busy with putting together my book (The Fall Volume 1 now on sale here: http://theillustratedsection.com/the-fall-volume-1) so I was unable to bring you a preview for a web comic that really deserves a good write up. I am about to correct that.
This week, I am serving up some Turbo Defiant Kimecan! (click it for the comic itself) The crew behind this beast are many. First we have Ferran, the artist/creator/Author of the series. With tons of experience under his belt, including working at Marvel as a colorist, he brings a genuinely fun and super anime/Manga style to the book. The work is all done so meticulously that the whole thing comes out looking like a series of cels from an animated movie strung together with word bubbles. It’s very humbling to know someone of this caliber is out there putting stuff out for free on the same intertubes I do. Backing him up are James, Mudo, Lobo, Diablo, Aaron, Camps, and Sir Tobas. In other words, a freaking gaggle of pros. I recommend you go to the site (click the link above) to read all their bios.
About the comic:
The series itself starts out, like many eastern flavored comics do, in the middle of the action. You are immediately thrown into a frenetic chase sequence where we see a cat suddenly get ripped apart and a human is coming out of him? It’s all very surreal and dreamlike but then you realize, it’s because it IS a dream. But the dream was important! At the heart of the story is Lucas. A 19 year old kid who lost his mother at a young age and has his widowed dad taking care of him. You would think this would lead to an angsty kid, but not Lucas. This kid is all resilience and love for his dad. It’s nice to see this kind of relationship instead of the cliche angsty teen with a dead mom who hates his strict dad and rebels. Anyway, Lucas runs into some trouble, but it’s trouble that has been a long time coming because of one of his past lives.
Along the way he meets a group of would be protectors that have been searching for the re-incarnated version of their long lost hero. That happens to be Lucas. I won’t go more into the story than that, because there is a lot more to it, but suffice to say, it’s an interesting and fun read. It is a very fast paced style that Ferran uses to tell the story, but it works well. With his beautiful art and dynamic scenes, you will pause every so often just to take a look at a single panel and wonder how the EFF he came up with that. If you do decide to take a ride on the TURBO TRAIN, make sure you read the flash enabled version of the comic as it is more complete and up to date than the HTML version.
